Community Service Report
April 2004
Prepared by BA Marino
Centennial Project
Objective 2003/04: to complete project planning, raise additional funds, and begin construction
Current Actions: Location has been confirmed with City with construction to commence in May. With addition of
Gazebo to Rotary Park is has been recommended that we install a new, more formal sign identifying the park. Details
and budget needs for a new sign are being investigated - does board support in principle this concept to acquire
a new sign for Rotary Park? Estimated costs for a sand blasted cedar sign of similar size as existing sign, $800-$1000.
Greening
Objective 2003/04: to complete tree planting in spring 2004 and to implement an image enhancing project in the
City ie. garden at base of Teck hill or garden at sign across from landfill
Current Actions: April 3rd tree planting was well supported by Rotarians with approximately 500 trees planted.
Brenda Rutherglen was able to access bio solids to support the tree growth. She will be reporting to board of
effectiveness of the use of bio solids after she reviews planting sites in fall.
Garden project for base of Teck Cominco hill is progressing. Leigh Harrison and Brenda Rutherglen have discussed
project with Teck, Highways, and Communities in Bloom. Teck is supportive and will provide water to site as well
as a catch basin during periods of heavy rain. CIB through Dan Rodlie will be working with us to design garden,
drill holes in asphalt and retaining wall for bed. They would like to pursue rock wall themes that are in place
in West Trail. Columbia Valley Greenhouse will be consulted for garden design. Project objectives for 2004 are
to prepare site, build rock wall and prepare bed. 2005 plans are to plant garden. Detail financial requirements
for project unknown at this time but it is anticipated that some commitment from Rotary will be needed to complete
project. The committee respectfully requests an initial $500 in the 2005 Rotary year, to provide for purchase
of needed plants.
