2003/2004 Vocational Service Activities
1. RYLA student. Scott met with
Keith Smyth to review past RYLA activities. Keith will lead this year's search to identify a candidate to attend
the RYLA camp at Selkirk College this summer. Cost for participation is estimated at $700.
2. J.L. Crowe Scholarship. By decision of Club Directors at the September-2003 directors'
meeting, this year's scholarship will be $1,000, that is, up $750 from last year. Minutes of this meeting also
noted that the scholarship should have conditions: a) the scholarship will be given for service to the school,
and b) the winner will speak to the Club.
3. Student Interviews. Scott met with Jenny Ghilarducci and Dieter Bogs. Jenny
has been in contact with J.L. Crowe representatives. Just as with last year, the school is uncertain if they have
sufficient resources to do their share in organizing interviews this year. More information is anticipated from
the School before the end of February.
4. Workplace 101*. A contribution of $300 sponsored a reception evening,
one of four, each sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. There were a large number of Rotarians attending and participating
in this event.
*Workplace 101 was a new venture for
the Rotary Club of Trail, in collaboration with other local Rotary Clubs (Castlegar, Rossland and Beaver Valley)
and was organized in partnership with Teck Cominco's "The Learning Centre," the Greater Trail Community
Skills Centre and School District #20. This was a series of workshops whose objective was to provide students with
basic skills in preparation for work experience placements and future employment. These workshops will target high
school students, one post secondary group and clients of the Skills Centre. Up to 48 participants per workshop
are expected. On 1-October, Jane Power (Teck Cominco Metals Ltd., The Learning Centre) gave a presentation describing
Workplace 101 to the Rotary Club of Trail.
