STUDENT EXCHANGE
Outgoing student Chris Schlender from Fruitvale left for Germany today. He will be spending the year in Bavaria.
Incoming student Milena (pronounced MaLaina) Santos from Brazil arrived on Aug .26. We have held two gatherings for her: one to meet students from the Interact Club and the other to meet the other two Rotary exchange students in Greater Trail, a French girl staying in Rossland and an Italian girl in the Beaver Valley. Milena does not speak much English but is learning fast. She has registered at the Crowe, set up a bank account and started receiving her Rotary stipend, spent a day with Rotary counselor Jenny Ghilarducci and her family, and seems to be settling in nicely. Next weekend, I will be taking her to the student exchange orientation camp in Coeur d’Alene.
All the host families for the year are in place. They are:
August/ September - Raymond and Linda Masleck - Warfield
October/November - Dennis and Carol Schlender – Fruitvale
December/January - Dave and Gay Prokopetz - Trail
February/March - Dino and Elsa Santarossa -Warfield
April/May/June - Jim and Donna Halpin – Trail

WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE
Bruce Fawcett is pursuing two projects:
- $1,000 for a project in India that incoming District Governor Elizabeth has asked us to support.

-$2,700 for a Matching Grant project. This is the minimum Club contribution that is needed to obtain RI matching support and we hope to come up with a suitable project in Guatemala (at Comitancillo).

INTERACT
The students were planning on having their first meeting this month. This project will be quiet this month from the club’s perspective, as Lana is in Norway for five weeks.

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE (GSE)
Three ads were purchased in the Trail Times careers section promoting a GSE team going to Chile in May. Two applications were received and Hugh Hamilton and Leigh are interviewing these candidates.
