The club completed its Rotary International 2005
centennial project, the construction of a gazebo in Rotary Park on the Columbia River. After much evaluation, the
members voted to commit $25,000 toward the construction of hostel to be developed by the Trail Family and Individual
Resource Centre Society for low-income for visitors to Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital, subject to other funding
partners coming on board.
Other community and fundraising projects included planting trees, silent auction, diamond pendant raffle, Christmas Choral Festival, dinner theatre and Breakfast with Santa, and the purchase of a computer for the Sanctuary after school program. Club members continued to serve on the boards of Villa Society and Jubilee Manor, two seniors housing projects initiated by the club.
Vocational Service projects included a $1,000 graduation scholarship for a J. Lloyd Crowe student going onto post-secondary education and who lives up to the Rotary motto ³service above self.² The club also supported financially and participated in Workplace 101, a one-day employment training seminar for secondary students.
The club played host to international student Patarin Beau Amaralikit from Thailand and arranged for local student Katie Moorhead to spend the year in Mexico. Club members also participated in a friendship exchange to Brazil and a local student went on a summer exchange to France.
Among the fellowship events held were several Guess Who¹s Coming to Dinner outings in which the identities of the member diners and hosts were a surprise. The club expanded its annual June barbecue into a regional event, organized in conjunction with the two Castlegar clubs, for which 140 turned out, despite cool weather.
